Infographic: Brain Foods

Brain Foods Infographic from
This fantastic infographic entitled "Brain Foods" has some interesting facts about the brain, how it works and what it needs, in terms of nutrition, for proper function, mood and memory.

As one might expect, the 14 foods listed are all plant-based:

❤ Fruits (avocado, tomato, blueberries)

❤ Vegetables (broccoli, spinach, red cabbage)

❤ Beans and legumes
❤ Nuts
❤ Seeds (Chia and sunflower)
❤ Whole, unrefined grains
❤ Dark chocolate

Notably, not a single animal product (i.e., meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese or other dairy products) made it on the list.  The simple reason is that the brain appears to need a diet rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.  While animal products do contain these fatty acids, mounting scientific research shows that these foods are not the best sources because high consumption of meat and dairy is linked to obesity and various diseases, including cancer.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are plentiful in the plant-based foods illustrated in this infographic and are the wiser choice because these foods are also packed with fiber and micronutrients.

What about dark chocolate? Doesn't chocolate contain milk, an undesirable animal product?   The answer is both yes and no - it depends on the brand.   The best advise is to check the ingredient list. Just because it says its "dark" doesn't mean its the best choice.

Fortunately, there are many brands of delicious dark chocolate that do not contain milk products.  These include:

❤ Endangered Species Organic Dark Chocolate
❤ Newman's Own Dark Chocolate Varieties
❤ Divine Dark Chocolate Varieties
In conclusion, eating a plant-based diet is not only heart-healthy and weight loss friendly, it is also brain-healthy!
