This orangutan is the victim of the massive slashing and burning of pristine rain forest to make room for palm oil plantations.  If you find this image disturbing, I encourage you to educate yourself of the devastating effects that palm oil production is having on the environment and the many species of animals, including orangutans.

Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that is high in saturated fat and that is widely used in many different types of products, including food, cosmetics, body lotions and cleaning agents.  For a list of manufacturers and products, please read Palm Oil:  Detect and Avoid.

For more information on use of palm oil as a substitute for trans fats in foods like baked goods and breakfast bars, please see Palm Oil Not a Healthy Substitute for Trans Fats (USDA Agricultural Research Service).
