Picture of the Day: When Calories are Good
While there continues to be a debate about whether or not sugar-free soft drinks actually contribute to weight gain, thicker waistlines and belly fat, one thing is for certain: almost all sodas contain potentially toxic and hazardous chemicals and additives.
Most diet sodas additionally contain the artificial sweeteners Aspartame or Acesulfame Potassium. Aspartame has been the subject of many studies and has been linked to about 90 different adverse reactions, symptoms and ailments. While not as much is currently known about Acesulfame Potassium, some studies show that it can cause tumors, brain damage and hypoglycemia.
In contrast, fresh fruit and vegetable juice or smoothie will contain a certain number of calories. But the calories from nutrient-dense fruits and veggies are the calories that dieters want. They are an excellent source of health promoting vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and dietary fiber, satisfy a sweet craving, and help control appetite and overeating because they are generally very filling.
