Increase Serotonin with Food and Activities [Infographic]

Foods and Activities to Increase Serotonin (the Happy Chemical, Hormone)
Infographic from
Along with dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin, serotonin is often called one of the "happy chemicals" or "happy hormones".

Although serotonin is most often thought of as a brain chemical, it is a neurotransmitter found in the pineal gland, digestive tract, central nervous system and blood platelets.

Research suggests that serotonin is involved in regulating appetite, sleep, mood and aging.  It also influences learning, memory, behavior, cardiovascular function, bone metabolism, body temperature, muscle contraction and wound healing.

Because serotonin suppresses the appetite while promoting feelings of satiety and well-being and regulating sleep, proper serotonin levels have been linked to general weight loss, abdominal (belly) fat loss, and healthy weight maintenance.  Fortunately, increasing serotonin levels does not require expensive drugs, supplements or treatments - certain foods and activities naturally stimulate release of serotonin activity (while providing other health benefits), as this infographic illustrates:

Cayenne and Other Hot Peppers (relieve depression, potential "fat burner")
✿ Almonds (contain natural dietary fiber and magnesium, a brain "food")
✿ Walnuts (nutritionally dense, contain Omega 3 Fatty Acids, a brain nutrient)

✿ Green Smoothie (a powerhouse of nutrients, natural detox aid and energy booster)
