The factory farmed wheat that is grown and consumed today is not the same wheat that was grown and eaten in our grandmothers' generation. Many experts advise that these modern inferior wheat products account for the increase in gluten intolerance in many individuals today.
Some well-respected physicians, nutritionists and researchers believe that gluten intolerance plays a role in weight gain (specifically the accumulation of abdominal fat) and interferes with weight and belly fat loss.
Although many gluten-free foods are now available in most supermarkets, the majority of these store-bought products are heavily processed and contain preservatives, additives, chemicals and other harmful, unhealthy or undesirable ingredients - like GMO corn and sugar.
Therefore, individuals with gluten sensitivity are encouraged to make healthy gluten-free substitutions.
Fortunately, if you are willing to invest the time in your health and prepare your own food, there are many interesting and healthy gluten-free options as this infographic illustrates.
These include whole grain, bean, nut and certain white flours and starches. Naturally, some of these (nut, bean and whole grain) are significantly healthier choices than others (white flours and starches).
Whenever possible, organic versions should be purchased because certified "organically grown" (by definition) is non-GMO, isn't sprayed with toxic industrial pesticides, insecticides and herbicides, and is typically more nutritious.
