A Vegan Bodybuilding Experiment

Traditional bodybuilding methods stress eating a lot of protein, specifically a lot of animal protein like beef, poultry, pork, eggs, whey and casein powders.  While the RDA of protein for sedentary males is 0.8 grams of protein per 1 kilogram of body weight, most bodybuilders eat protein well in excess of that - some as much as 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.

One of the prevailing myths in the bodybuilding world is that loads of protein is required to build muscle and only animal-derived protein is "quality" protein.  However, more and more vegetarian and vegan bodybuilders are successfully challenging this myth with awesome results.  Among the many vegan athletes, just a few of these are Jim Morris, Billy Simmonds, Dusan Dudas, Alexander Dargatz, Joel Krkilis, Kenneth G. Williams, Robbie Hazeley, Robert Cheeke and Joshua Knox.

Joel Kirkilis:
"Being a competitive vegan bodybuilder, in a sport which has a significant emphasis on the consumption of animal proteins has provided me with the opportunity to prove that a vegan diet is just as effective for enhancing physical performance yet more importantly it does not involve the cruelty required to produce "traditional" bodybuilding foods."  ~~ Read more at Great Vegan Athletes
